Lunch and Lead | Unlocking Backyard Homes: Lessons from Utah's DADU Transition

Join Wasatch Advocates for Livable Communities (WALC) for a lunchtime conversation about one of the biggest shifts in Utah housing policy in years: the rise of backyard homes.

In just two years, Utah went from a patchwork of local rules to a statewide baseline for Detached Accessory Dwelling Units, or DADUs: small, standalone homes tucked into a backyard that can house an aging parent, an adult child starting out, or an essential worker close to their job. With an October 2026 deadline for many Utah cities to adopt a DADU policy, understanding how this transition works matters right now.

During this virtual lunch-hour session, WALC's Turner Bitton and Jessica Kjar will share the presentation they gave to planners at the APA Utah Fall Conference, walking through how Utah got here, from 2025's HB 88 to 2026's SB 284, and what cities are deciding today on parking, lot size, design standards, owner-occupancy, and homeowner education.

You'll leave with a clear picture of what's changed statewide, what's still up to local communities to decide, and how WALC is helping cities and homeowners navigate the shift.

Enjoy your lunch. Let us give you the information you need. Leave ready to lead.
