Our Story

A severe shortage of homes is creating a generational challenge for the Wasatch Region. From Ogden to Provo, Tooele to Park City, communities throughout the region are feeling the pressure of rising costs, limited housing options, and outdated policies that restrict growth and opportunity.

Wasatch Advocates for Livable Communities (WALC) is a network of neighbors working together to build a region that welcomes more neighbors and harnesses the opportunities created by growing communities. We envision a Wasatch Region defined by opportunity: where housing is affordable and attainable for all of our neighbors, communities are inclusive, and neighbors of all ages, incomes, and abilities can thrive.

Our Mission

Wasatch Advocates for Livable Communities (WALC) champions community development in the Wasatch Region through programs and public policies focused on housing, land use, local governance, and transportation.

Our Vision

WALC envisions a sustainable, inclusive, and livable Wasatch Region where every neighbor has the opportunity to live a fulfilling life in a vibrant, connected community. We do this work to heal and reverse the impacts of the exclusionary land-use policies that have long shaped the housing landscape.

We believe housing is foundational. It shapes the direction of our lives: health outcomes, educational opportunity, economic mobility, and environmental sustainability. That’s why we work to ensure that:

  • Housing is affordable and attainable at every income level

  • Land use and zoning policies support vibrant, opportunity rich neighborhoods

  • Renters are protected and empowered

  • Displacement is mitigated and prevented

  • People experiencing homelessness are supported with dignity and integration

  • Transportation, governance, and planning decisions reflect the needs of all residents

Why It Matters

The Wasatch Region is growing, and so are the stakes. Without bold action, our communities are at risk of becoming a place where only a shrinking few can afford to live. But with the right policies and people-powered advocacy, we can create a region that remains welcoming, dynamic, and livable for generations to come.

Affordable and attainable housing is essential to building strong communities and neighborhoods. It’s not just about housing: it’s about who we are, and who we want to be.
