Lunch and Lead | Lessons from Portland

Lunch and Lead is WALC’s free, virtual lunch-hour series that gives community members the information they need to lead on housing in their own neighborhoods.

This session comes just ahead of the Salt Lake City Council hearings on Expanding Housing Options, a proposal that would allow duplexes, triplexes, backyard cottages, and other smaller homes in neighborhoods that currently allow only one kind of house.

Portland made similar changes through its Residential Infill Project, and Morgan Tracy, Senior Planner with the City of Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, worked on it. He’ll walk through what worked, what was hard, and how Portland handled the questions Salt Lake City is asking now, including whether owners should have to live on site, how much parking new homes need, and how to protect longtime residents from demolition and displacement.

WALC Policy Manager Lauren Cole will then share where Expanding Housing Options stands, what’s still being decided, and how the Portland experience applies here. We’ll leave time for your questions and end with a few ways to weigh in before the City Council hearings on November 10 and 17 and the vote in early December.

Enjoy your lunch. Let us give you the information you need. Leave ready to lead.
