Senate Bill (SB) 284, passed in 2026, establishes new statewide standards requiring most cities to allow Detached Accessory Dwelling Units (DADUs), or backyard cottages, on qualifying residential lots while increasing transparency around local land use processes and applications. Communities throughout the Wasatch Region are now at an important crossroads as they begin implementing SB284 and updating local DADU ordinances.
Now, residents in Herriman have a chance to advocate for policies that make DADUs in your community. In the coming months, Herriman will consider policies that can make DADUs possible for neighbors to build. This means new homes for college students, aging family members, or young families.
Wasatch Advocates for Livable Communities (WALC) believes cities have an opportunity not only to comply with state law, but to go further by adopting policies that make DADUs practical, accessible, and financially feasible for our neighbors.
